Article on Interracial Dating from an Interracial Couple
Jacquelyn Murray, a medical technology major, and her boyfriend Jeffery Ubinger, an education major, are girlfriend and boyfriend. They met at WNMU and have been together over three years. From going to the movies and eating dinner together, to staying in and enjoying each other's company, they consider themselves a typical couple. There are some, however, that disagree with this couple's idea of typical. Murray is of African descent, while Ubinger is Caucasian. They are part of what has been coined as an interracial relationship. The Mustang had the privilege to interview Murray and Ubinger about their relationship and how other people's opinions have affected them.
M: What were people's reactions when you became a couple? Let's begin with your friends.
Ubinger: When I told my friends here [campus] that I have this girl in my class and she's really pretty, they all agreed with me. My friends here were supportive, and everyone around campus was supportive too.
Murray: Well, other onlookers would tell me they were upset that I was with a white person.
M: Other onlookers being who?
Murray: Other African American males. I would not say they were jealous; it was more that they were offended with me. They were offended that I wasn't dating anyone within my own race. M: Jeff, did you experience the same situation?
Ubinger: I would say people on campus were generally cool about it, except for the same people that Jacque described. These guys were polite to me, but as soon as I would turn my back they would start hitting on her.
M: So how did both you deal with these situations?
Ubinger: I'd just brush it off.
Murray: It's not like a big deal, I think.
M: How did your friends back home feel about your relationship, how did they react?
Murray: My friends back home in Arizona were very supportive.
Ubinger: I guess they kind of let me know their disappointment. Well, I guess they should have been used to it, since back in high school I was never dated someone from my own race.
M: How did they show their disappointment?
Ubinger: I mean they'd make rude comments in a joking manner. But I wouldn't take it as joking. And because they were my friends, I didn't fight with them over it. You know how you try to tell your friend, "That offended me, that kind of upset me." Since they were my friends, I don't feel as if they took me seriously. I mean, they're not racist; they're just rude sometimes.
M: And finally, how did your family react when they realized you were an interracial couple?
Murray: My mom was great about it. My sisters were great about it. But, um, my dad. My dad knew that I liked white guys, and he accepted it in the beginning but he still questioned me. Kinds of like, why don't you like black guys? But after he met Jeff, he let it go. When he saw I was happy, he left me alone about it. Not that he was racist in the beginning; he just wondered why I never dated a black guy before.
Ubinger: My immediate family, my mom and dad, and brother were super-duper about it. They've never had a problem with whom I've dated.
But, I remember my grandma on my dad's side; I guess she's racist without knowing it. She doesn't know she's making a rude comment, she just so used to it. But I remember my grandma on my mom's side. my brother and I were sitting in the living room and she came in and said, "Oh about Jacque, don't worry about your Grandma Ubinger, she can't hide her disappointment as well as I can." Ironically, my [female] cousin was dating a black guy at the same time. And she [maternal grandmother] said she was going to write her out of the will for dating him. All the female cousins were going to receive jewelry from the will.
M: Jacque how did you feel when you met Jeff's maternal Grandmother? Did Jeff prepare you in any way?
Murray: He told me just to smile and say hi. At that point I was just being careful about everything I said. I didn't want her to think I was this rude person. I also didn't want her to think I was bad for Jeff. But after I met her, as we were going home, Jeff's mom called and said that she wanted me to be comfortable and that I was invited to stay at her house. It was really shocking for me because I didn't even want to go home with him after he told me I was going to meet her.
M: Would you say the stresses of being an interracial couple have taken a toll on your relationship?
Murray: [Questioning Jeff] I don't know, did it?
Ubinger: I would say it did. You [Murray] don't really like my friends from back home. I would say that you get upset when I choose them, or defend them.
Murray: With me, I figured I'd get over it because there are other things that have happened with me just being black in general. I just figured, oh well, it will all just blow over sometime sooner or later.
M: So this is not an issue for you?
Murray: Compared to other people's interracial relationships, I think ours is pretty good to tell you the truth. I've seen worse.
M: Have you ever been in a scenario that makes you realize you are not a typical couple?
Ubinger: I wouldn't say scenario as much as. I guess I notice racism more often now. For instance, if I were going to the store with my friends I wouldn't notice looks or anything. But if I go out somewhere with Jacque, a lady slammed the door on us at Wendy's or these looks of. well, disgust I guess.
Murray: Yeah, pretty much.
M: Jacque have you noticed anything on a similar note when you're with Jeff?
Murray: Oh yeah, when we're together, when we go out to eat or if we go to Wal-Mart or any other stores, we'll always get someone who looks at us like "What the hell is that all about?"
Ubinger: It's so weird the looks that I notice when we're together.
Murray: As opposed to when we're alone or with our friends.
Ubinger: Right.
Murray: Because if I'm just with my friends people think, oh it's just a bunch of girls and they're shopping. As soon as I'm with him, sometimes if we are just standing there and he grabs my hand or kisses me on the cheek and people will look.
Ubinger: And think, oh they're together. Some people seem shocked.
M: Has being together through these situations taught you anything?
Murray: When we're by ourselves, or if we're out to eat and I'm not paying attention to anyone else around me, I always just forget there's a difference between the color of our skin. I never think about it until I look at a picture. Then I see why people see us as being different. But it shouldn't be such a big deal that people feel disappointed or upset.
Ubinger: I notice people are black or white, but I couldn't care less. To me, it's just not an issue.
